BACTERIAL DNA LAB INTERN

Job Details

Full Time / Part Time: Full Time Internship

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Business Unit: Chemistry

Reports to: Director

Job Description 

Provide technical assistance in carrying out various sample characterizations in a bacterial DNA lab. Operate laboratory apparatus and equipment. Record and evaluate data in accordance with the methods requested.

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to

  • Assist Principal R&D Scientists with projects.
  • Apply technical skills to design and implement a variety of laboratory protocols and experiments. Experimental procedures include DNA extraction, PCR, qRT-PCR, dPCR, DNA quantification, DNA sequencing.
  • Organize and prioritize daily laboratory tasks to fulfill established research aims. Must demonstrate independent working and reasoning abilities to resolve new experimental challenges.
  • Evaluate research data and revise or develop new techniques to resolve work problems.

Record Keeping and Data Collection

  • Maintain accurate, detailed records and experimental data and protocols.
  • Prepare graphs, slides, and tables via photography, computer, or manually.
  • Communicate results to and understand instructions from Principal R&D Scientists and colleagues.
  • Discuss the goals of each project with the project lead. Before proceeding, develop a step-by-step written procedure outlining the specific actions required to conduct the experiment.

Laboratory Safety/Lab Equipment Maintenance

  • Demonstrate and practice lab safety precautions.
  • Receive verbal and/or written instructions from Principal R&D Scientists on standards and specialized lab safety procedures.
  • Follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding the handling and maintenance of all lab equipment. Have working knowledge of equipment operation manuals and procedure manuals whenever necessary.
  • Order reagents and materials when needed.
  • Monitor workflow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance, and preparing stock solutions.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work one of the basic sciences.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in a laboratory.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Good math and computer skills.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office Products: Specifically – Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to cooperate and collaborate effectively with other employees.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Professional Attitude.
  • Timeliness.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a lab.
  • Previous experience using a pipette and performing serial dilutions and calculations.
  • Previous experience with sterile technique.
  • Previous experience with DNA handling, quantification, and characterization.

Compensation Information

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

 

Physical Demands and Exposures

  • Environment can be extremely noisy and chaotic at times.
  • Need to have a high degree of concentration in a busy area.
  • Must sit for extended periods of time.
  • Monday through Sunday, over-time as required (24hr business operations).
  • Ability to individually lift: Maximum 25 lbs.
